This unit was formed from remnants of the 1st Battalion Mississippi Sharpshooters, and remnants of the 3rd, 22nd, 31st, and 40th Regiments of Mississippi Infantry at Smithfield, North Carolina, April 9, 1865. Johnston’s army, of which this unit was a part, was surrendered on April 26, 1865.
